Parasitology

The internal condition of our patients is equally important as the external condition. If a patient presents some problematic behaviors or something about their feces/urates seems unusual, we will usually run a fecal to look for any internal parasites. A fecal float is usually performed, but I personally love doing centrifuge fecals. The outcomes are pretty similar. You may get more results from the centrifuge because it uses centrifugal force to push any parasites to the surface, where the microscope slide is.

Depending on the severity of the infection and the parasite found, we will start a treatment plan or leave them be. A coccidia protozoan is featured in the picture.
